Reconnecting: Healing the Hidden Health Crisis

The last few years highlighted an underlying crisis that extends beyond the immediate health concerns: the epidemic of loneliness. This issue, exacerbated by lockdowns and social distancing measures, has been identified by the Surgeon General as a significant public health concern.

The fact that loneliness is declared an "epidemic" underscores the profound impact of social isolation on our overall well-being. As Yehuda Berg insightfully noted, "Community is not just about being geographically close to someone or part of the same social web network. It's about feeling connected and responsible for what happens. Humanity is our ultimate community, and everyone plays a crucial role in it." This sentiment captures the essence of our need for connection and the collective responsibility to nurture it.

The pervasive feelings of isolation and loneliness that many of us experience lead to a cascade of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, disordered eating, substance abuse, relational conflicts, increased suicidality, and more. The lack of connection profoundly impacts our pursuit of a healthy life, emphasizing the importance of reconnecting with others in regular and meaningful ways.

The shift to a life predominantly online, while a helpful adaptation in some ways, has diluted the recognition of just how important physical togetherness is. It plays a vital role in our mental and emotional health. Lack of community or social connection forced us into a state of solitary existence, overlooking the value of the simple presence of others.

Yet, the fundamental human need for connection remains.

Social interactions are not merely beneficial but essential for our well-being. We are reminded that "we cannot be truly healthy when we are isolated. We are meant to live in community - surrounded by friends, family, neighbours, and colleagues." The Surgeon General's identification of loneliness as an epidemic brings to light the critical role of social support as an integral part of a well-lived life.

Where do we start?

Small, intentional steps. From scheduling time with friends to joining community groups, every action taken toward connection is a step toward healing and fulfillment.

We encourage you to prioritize being with others, to rediscover the joy and healing that comes from communal gatherings and shared experiences.

Our collective thriving hinges on our ability to come together, to foster a sense of community, and to support one another.

Let this be a call to action, let’s create community.
